A Change in Focus

Hello all. I mentioned in my last post that I’ve gone about as far as I want to at present with the third edition/Pathfinder rules that we’re using for the Iourn games. There’s a lot of consolidation and rewriting ahead of me, but I intend to make that work available over at Iourn.com when it’s ready. In the meantime I’m looking at a slight change in focus for the blog posts.

I’m going to be running a series of playtest sessions for D&D 5th Edition (aka D&D Next) over the coming weeks. I’m hoping to use this blog to post summaries of each session, and my experience in managing the new rules as a GM. And obviously, I invite comment and discussion on the posts from anyone with a mind to do so.

I ran a D&D Next session back in May from the first Playtest Package. I think it’s fair to say that our general opinion was of a game that was better than 4th Edition, but one that seemed to have a few dodgy mechanics. It was very hard to judge the game in a meaningful fashion without any rules for character generation.

The second playtest packet released last week (and still available) is a much more comprehensive affair, and deserves to be taken a little more seriously. I’ve stitched together a basic campaign setting from old bits of Mystara and Greyhawk and written an adventure that should take the PCs from 1st to 5th level. The game will run for several sessions, although I doubt that it’ll be weekly as we all have to juggle it around other commitments.

So: the first of the playtest sessions takes place on 29th August, and I should have something up on the blog about it shortly after that date.
